Śrī Viṣṇutattvavinirṇaya with the Commentary of Śrī Jayatīrtha – Kannada Translation

Śrī Madhvācārya composed ten Prakaraṇa Granthas (independent philosophical treatises), each dedicated to the systematic examination of one or more fundamental doctrines of Vedānta. Among these, the Śrī Viṣṇutattvavinirṇaya occupies a place of exceptional importance. Although classified as a Prakaraṇa Grantha, it presents a comprehensive discussion of numerous philosophical doctrines central to the Dvaita tradition.

The eminent Ṭīkācārya Śrī Jayatīrtha composed an extensive commentary on this work. Owing to its profound philosophical depth, scholars regard the Viṣṇutattvavinirṇaya as second only to the Śrīmannyāyasudhā, and it is therefore affectionately known as the Aṇu-Sudhā ("The Smaller Sudhā").

As its title suggests, the work establishes the essential truths concerning Lord Viṣṇu. It demonstrates that Viṣṇu alone is the Supreme Reality revealed by all authentic scriptures, that all the Vedas principally proclaim His supremacy, that He is infinitely superior to the entire universe, and that Śrī Nārāyaṇa is completely free from every imperfection. Alongside these doctrinal discussions, the text presents penetrating critiques of various philosophical systems, including the Prābhākara, Bauddha (Buddhist), Jaina, Nyāya, and Vaiśeṣika schools.

One of the most engaging discussions in the commentary concerns the question: "Can knowledge of Dharma not be established merely through the teachings of great personalities such as the Buddha or Jina? Why is there a need for the apauruṣeya (authorless) Vedas?" Śrī Jayatīrtha answers that human beings are often subject to ignorance, error, and deception, making their statements incapable of providing absolute certainty. As he observes:

"Puruṣāṇāṃ bahulam ajñāna-vipralambhādyupalambhena teṣv api tat-saṃbhāvanayā āśvāsānupapatteḥ."

Since ignorance and deception are commonly found among human beings, unquestioning reliance on human testimony is unwarranted. The apauruṣeya Vedas, being free from all human limitations, alone constitute the infallible authority for determining Dharma and other fundamental truths. This lucid and practical explanation remains one of the highlights of the commentary.

Vidwan Krishnacharya Bidarahalli received his traditional śāstric education at the renowned Pūrṇaprajña Vidyāpīṭha. He belongs to the distinguished scholarly lineage of Bidarahalli Śrīnivāsa Tīrtha, the celebrated author of several traditional ṭippaṇis. His father, Bidarahalli Śrīnivāsācārya, was himself an eminent scholar and a model of traditional discipline, under whom the editor received his foundational training in the śāstras during his early years.
