About Us

A century-old institution dedicated to the living tradition of Sanskrit scholarship.

History of Sri Vyasaraja Mutt

Sri Vyasaraja Mutt has a history of nearly 800 years. The founding preceptor of this Mutt is Sriman Madhvacharya, who was born at Pajaka Kshetra near Udupi.

After Sriman Madhvacharya, great scholars such as Sri Padmanabha Tirtha, Sri Jayatirtha, Sri Rajendra Tirtha and many other eminent saints adorned this sacred seat.

Later, Sri Vyasaraja, who served as the Rajaguru of the Vijayanagara Empire, worshipped Lord Srinivasa of Tirumala for twelve years and brought new light to Indian philosophy.

Because of his extraordinary personality and contribution, the Mutt came to be widely known as Sri Vyasaraja Mutt.

Sri Vyasaraja

Sri Vyasaraja was not only a great scholar of Vyasa literature, but he also enriched Dasa Sahitya. He was a social reformer who gave Dasa Deeksha to great saints such as Purandaradasa and Kanakadasa.

He established a Sanskrit University in Vijayanagara and imparted education to thousands of students. The original Mutt is located in Sosale village near Mysore.

Present Pontiff

In this lineage, the 41st pontiff, His Holiness Sri Vidyashreesha Tirtha, who is presently adorning the Peetha, has acquired profound scholarship in Nyaya, Vedanta, Vyakarana and Mimamsa.
