Nyāyāmṛta, the magnum opus of Śrī Vyāsatīrtha, is one of the most celebrated works of Dvaita Vedānta. The work critically examines the various Advaita theories that advocate the illusoriness (mithyātva) of the phenomenal world and establishes, through rigorous philosophical reasoning, the reality of the universe in accordance with the Dvaita tradition.
Renowned for its depth and sophistication, Nyāyāmṛta is replete with subtle arguments drawn from Nyāya, Mīmāṃsā, logic, and scriptural exegesis. Its profound philosophical discussions have made it one of the most influential and intellectually demanding texts in the history of Indian philosophy.
Over the centuries, several scholars have attempted to respond to or explain Nyāyāmṛta, most notably through works such as the Advaitasiddhi. While traditional commentaries like the Taraṅgiṇī and Kaṇṭakoddhāra discuss many of these debates, they do not provide a complete treatment of every objection and response. Consequently, understanding the philosophical dialogue between Nyāyāmṛta and Advaitasiddhi often requires consulting multiple texts, making the subject difficult even for advanced students.
Another challenge lies in the fact that the available printed editions of Nyāyāmṛta, Advaitasiddhi, Taraṅgiṇī, and Kaṇṭakoddhāra contain numerous textual inaccuracies and typographical errors, creating additional obstacles for readers and teachers alike.
Recognizing these difficulties, Paṇḍita Vīranārāyaṇācārya Pāṇḍuraṅgi, a distinguished disciple and scholar, has undertaken the task of making this complex philosophical tradition more accessible. In addition to presenting the discussions found in the traditional commentaries, he independently examines several arguments of the Advaitasiddhi wherever they are not addressed in the Taraṅgiṇī or Kaṇṭakoddhāra, drawing directly upon the original source texts.
This work therefore serves as a valuable guide for students, teachers, and researchers seeking a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of Nyāyāmṛta and the classical Dvaita–Advaita philosophical debate.
