Padārtha Viveka is an excellent introductory text for students beginning their study of Dvaita Vedānta. Just as the Tarkasaṅgraha serves as the foundational text for Nyāya, the Siddhānta Kaumudī for Sanskrit grammar, and the Arthasaṅgraha for Mīmāṃsā, Padārtha Viveka provides a systematic gateway to understanding the fundamental categories (padārthas) of the Dvaita philosophical tradition.
While Śrī Madhvācārya discusses the nature of reality and categories in works such as the Tattvasaṅkhyāna and Tattvaviveka, Padārtha Viveka presents these concepts in a remarkably simple, logical, and accessible manner, making it especially valuable for beginners as well as serious students of Dvaita.
The text classifies reality into eight principal categories:
Dravya Viveka (Substance)
Guṇa Viveka (Quality)
Karma Viveka (Action)
Sāmānya Viveka (Generality)
Viśeṣa Viveka (Particularity)
Viśiṣṭa Viveka (Qualified Entity)
Aṃśi Viveka (Whole and Parts)
Abhāva Viveka (Non-existence)
Although Dvaita philosophy fundamentally classifies all reality into Svatantra (the Independent Reality—Supreme Lord Viṣṇu) and Asvatantra (all dependent entities), this work adopts the logical framework of classical Indian philosophy by organizing the categories into substance, quality, action, and related concepts. At the same time, it firmly upholds the Vedic doctrine of the Supreme Lord's absolute sovereignty and interprets these categories from the standpoint of Dvaita Vedānta rather than mere logical analysis. This harmonious integration of logic and Vedānta is one of the defining features of the work.
